14 Tips for Finding a Job

1. Perfect Your Resume! You can apply for tons of jobs, but if your resume has spelling or grammar issues, is 15 pages long, or uses incorrect tenses, you may not even get a call for an interview. There are some great templates online and in Word; pick one that showcases you and your experience. You don't have to list every single duty you performed at every single job....just the most important stuff. Be sure and include volunteer work, especially if you don't have a lot of paid experience.
2. Get at least three references - and let them know you're using them as a reference. A lot of companies request references during the application process, so make sure you get their address, phone number, and email address. Letters of Recommendation from previous employers/managers are great!
3. Start looking for jobs! First, I'd recommend making a post on Facebook or whatever social media you use. Get the word out to your family and friends. Please don't post vague stuff. No "Lookin for a job". No "Who's Hiring?". Instead, post something a little more professional. "I'm currently looking for full time employment. My experience includes 4 years of accounting, and 6 years of admin/clerical work. I'm very organized and highly motivated. Please PM me if you know of a job where I may be a good fit".
4. Create a checklist. Until you start working, you'll want to visit sites daily. Check them off as you do them. You can even print out this list and put a check mark (in pencil!) to what you've done for the day, then erase at the end of the day (plus all the links are here!).
5. Next...get that resume online and start looking online. First, I highly recommend Indeed. Sign up, upload your resume and complete your profile. The best part of Indeed...Job Alerts. You can search Indeed for specific jobs in specific areas. You can also set up job alerts...so if you're looking for a job as an electrician in Pearland with a 15 mile radius, those jobs can be emailed to you daily.
6. Check this blog! I try to post new jobs daily, focusing on areas south of I-10 all the way to Galveston. I do a lot of research to try and find new, relevant jobs for those that live in or near my community.
7. LinkedIn is kind of like the Facebook of the business community. Create your profile and look for jobs.
8. Look at Snagajob, especially for retail/fast food/entry level jobs (although they do list professional and trade jobs too).
9. Similar to Indeed and LinkedIn, go to CareerBuilder and create your profile, upload your resume, and look for jobs.
10. ZipRecruiter is also similar to the above sites; upload your resume and/or look for jobs tailored to your experience and location.
11. If you haven't already created a profile and uploaded your resume to WorkInTexas, do that now, and look for jobs.
12. Use Google, but be careful. Do a search for "jobs near me". This search is going to give you tons of results, so you'll want to narrow that down to your experience and location. These jobs are pulled from all over the internet. Some were posted over 30 days ago and contain expired links. And if something looks too good to be true, please don't even click the link! You can always go to the company's website, find the Career link, and look at and apply to jobs from there.
13. Repeat! Keep going to these sites, getting fresh updates. Take breaks, drink water, but this is your job 'til you get a job.
14. Is there a company you've always wanted to work for, but you've been too busy working or doing life to really pursue getting a job there? This may be your chance. Go to that company's website, find the Careers or Jobs link, and see what they have open.
